If you have a shadier spot, be it under trees, or a border/patio that only gets a couple of hours sun a day first or last thing, then there are wildflower options.
They work in pots and containers, borders or in wilder grassy areas.
RED CAMPION - is in fact, deep pink. It self-seeds prolifically in the right conditions to form a carpet of colour, but is easily removed or controlled and won't leave the cover of shade.
Flowers - April to June, sometimes again in September. Lots of little pink petals.
JACOB'S LADDER - is named for its leaves, but we love it for the flower. A wonderful lilac-blue, with a tiny orange centre.
Flowers - April to July. Tall flower spikes.
WHITE CAMPION - is particularly good for pollinators, and because it produces scent late in the day into the night, it benefits both butterflies and night-flying moths.
Flowers - May - October, on and off.
All of these wildflower varieties benefit from a rather brutal haircut, in July.
Cut back to 2 inches / 6 cm, leaving just a few basal leaves. Water well. Leave.
They resprout, in their own time, younger, fitter and stronger, because you cut them back.
All three are products in our shop as super-plugs, just starting to become available for the 2025 season.
Cheers,
Ed
