WILD CARROT (Daucus carota)

20cm bare-root super-plug (biennial). Supplied in its first year.

Wild Carrot (Daucus carota) is a beautiful native wildflower, easily recognised by its delicate, lace-like white flower heads that bloom from June to September. Often found in meadows, grasslands, coastal habitats and roadside verges, it thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, including chalky and sandy ground. As the flower heads mature, they curl inward to form distinctive bird's-nest-shaped seed heads, adding interest well into autumn.

Wild Carrot is one of the most valuable native plants for pollinating insects. Its flattened flower clusters provide an ideal landing platform for a remarkable variety of bees, hoverflies, beetles, wasps and butterflies. Species such as Small Skipper, Essex Skipper and Meadow Brown butterflies are frequently seen feeding on its nectar, while hoverflies are especially attracted to the abundant food source the flowers provide throughout the summer.

The plant is also an important larval food source for several moth species, including the attractive Carrot Seed Moth (Depressaria daucella), whose caterpillars feed on the flower heads and developing seeds. By supporting both adult pollinators and specialist insect larvae, Wild Carrot plays a valuable role in sustaining biodiversity within native grassland ecosystems.

For gardeners and meadow managers, Wild Carrot offers exceptional wildlife value combined with elegant natural beauty. Its airy flower heads bring texture and movement to wildflower displays, while its long flowering period ensures a steady supply of nectar for insects. Easy to grow and tolerant of dry conditions, Wild Carrot is an excellent choice for creating species-rich meadows and wildlife-friendly gardens that remain attractive throughout the growing season.
