About us, and why we only sell large plugs.
We are small family business based on the Nottinghamshire/Lincolnshire border. We don't open our nursery to the public, instead focusing on exhibiting at Plant Fairs and Farmer's Markets along with online sales.
Our ethos is simple - 100% organic and no plastics, of course, but more than that. We love helping people establish wildflower habitats (even if it's just a large pot) to restore our precious native plants.
So why don't we sell seed?
There's nothing wrong with sowing, and at scale it is the only practical option (topping up with plants is a great way to increase diversity).
The reason we settled on selling large 'adolescent' native wildflower plugs is that they are big enough to have excellent survival rates (unlike mini-plugs). This is down to the long, well- developed root-systems, which are the most important part of a perennial/biennial plant.
Seed on the other hand can be very erratic. A few varieties will prosper in the first year, but wildflowers often stagger their germination as a safeguard against all coming in a bad weather period. A good number of our native wildflowers need a winter on the ground to germinate (stratification). Many are then stubbornly slow to get going and establish after germination. By this time, competing weed-seeds in the soil have raced ahead, or the grass has dominated.
Large plugs basically speed up this process by up to 2 years, and of course, you can put exactly WHAT you want WHERE you want it, when planting plugs.
Here's the best bit. They are big enough to be planted into projects without "potting on". They are even suitable for planting into existing grassland (including lawns), creating an instant meadow effect at a fraction of the cost of buying meadow turf. We have made this work even in ryegrass lawns, that the literature says are too vigorous for wildflowers. You just have to take a little more time and care in the maintenance.
In short - plugs are faster, flower in their first summer, and are often more cost-effective in the long run. Read our reviews. Give them a go!
