CAMPION, WHITE (Silene Latifolia)

20cm bare-root super plug (perennial).

White Campion (Silene latifolia) is a graceful native wildflower that brightens hedgerows, woodland edges, meadows and roadside verges with its elegant white blooms from May through to September. The flowers open fully in the evening and remain attractive throughout the night, making White Campion particularly valuable for nocturnal wildlife. It grows well in full sun or partial shade and thrives in most well-drained soils, often self-seeding gently to form attractive naturalised colonies.

White Campion is especially important for moths and other night-flying insects. Its scented flowers produce abundant nectar after dusk, attracting a wide range of moth species, including various noctuid moths and hawk-moths. During the day, the flowers continue to provide nectar for bees, hoverflies and butterflies, making it a versatile wildlife plant that supports pollinators around the clock.

The plant is also an important larval food source for several moth species. Most notably, it supports species such as the Campion moth (Hadena rivularis) and related campion-feeding moths whose caterpillars develop on the flowers and seed capsules. This close relationship highlights White Campion's ecological value within native habitats and its role in sustaining specialised insect populations.

For gardeners and meadow enthusiasts, White Campion offers a long flowering season, reliable performance and excellent wildlife benefits. Its crisp white flowers create a striking contrast amongst more colourful meadow species, while its relaxed, natural appearance blends beautifully into wildflower plantings. Easy to establish and low maintenance, White Campion is an excellent choice for creating a rich and diverse habitat that supports pollinators both day and night.
