NETTLE-LEAFED BELLFLOWER (Campanula trachelium)
20cm bare root super-plug (perennial)
Nettle-leaved Bellflower is one of Britain's most impressive native bellflowers, producing elegant stems adorned with large, violet-blue, bell-shaped flowers throughout the summer. Its common name comes from its rough-textured, serrated leaves, which resemble those of a nettle, although the plant does not sting. Found naturally in woodland edges, hedgerows and shaded grasslands, this striking perennial brings both height and colour to wildflower meadows and wildlife-friendly gardens.
This hardy species thrives in moist, well-drained soils and is particularly well suited to shade, although it will also flourish in sunnier positions where soil moisture is retained. Nettle-leaved Bellflower is commonly found along woodland rides, hedge banks and field margins, making it an excellent choice for naturalistic planting schemes that seek to replicate traditional countryside habitats. Once established, it forms attractive clumps and returns reliably year after year with minimal maintenance.
The nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to a wide range of pollinating insects. Bumblebees are particularly fond of the deep bell-shaped blooms and can often be seen disappearing almost entirely inside the flowers while feeding. Honeybees, solitary bees and hoverflies also benefit from the plentiful nectar and pollen available during the summer months. By flowering when many pollinators are at their most active, Nettle-leaved Bellflower provides an important food source that helps sustain healthy insect populations.
Flowering from June to August, and occasionally into September, Nettle-leaved Bellflower typically reaches heights of 60-100cm. Its rich violet-blue flowers combine beautifully with species such as Foxglove, Hedge Woundwort, Meadow Cranesbill and Black Knapweed, creating colourful and wildlife-rich displays. Whether planted in a meadow, woodland margin or wildlife garden, this handsome native perennial offers long-lasting beauty, excellent pollinator value and a touch of wild countryside charm.
