MUSK MALLOW (Malva moschata)

20cm bare root super-plug (perennial).

Musk Mallow is a delightful native wildflower, prized for its elegant pink blooms and long flowering season. Its delicate, saucer-shaped flowers are held above finely divided foliage, creating a soft and graceful appearance that blends beautifully into wildflower meadows and naturalistic garden plantings. On warm summer days, the flowers and foliage can produce a subtle musky fragrance, giving rise to the plant's charming common name.

This hardy perennial thrives in sunny, open locations and prefers well-drained soils, particularly those rich in chalk or limestone. Musk Mallow is commonly found along roadside verges, field margins and unimproved grasslands, where it flourishes in relatively low-fertility conditions. It is drought tolerant once established and can perform well in exposed sites, making it a reliable choice for both wildflower meadows and wildlife-friendly gardens.

Musk Mallow is highly attractive to pollinating insects and provides a valuable nectar source throughout the summer months. Bumblebees, honeybees, solitary bees and hoverflies regularly visit the open flowers, which offer easy access to nectar and pollen. Its extended flowering period makes it particularly beneficial to pollinators, helping to provide a continuous food supply when many insects are at their most active.

Flowering from June through to September, Musk Mallow produces a succession of pale pink blooms and typically reaches heights of 50-100cm. The flowers combine beautifully with species such as Black Knapweed, Field Scabious, Lady's Bedstraw and Oxeye Daisy, creating the classic appearance of a traditional British wildflower meadow. Whether incorporated into a conservation project, a pollinator-friendly planting scheme or a cottage-style garden, Musk Mallow offers long-lasting colour, excellent wildlife value and a relaxed natural charm throughout the summer season.
