LEVEL OF MOISTURE - Doesn't like it bone dry, otherwise any soils including clay.
LEVEL OF SHADE - Prefers light shade, copes with moderate shade. Works in full sun in a meadow because of grass-shading, likewise you can mix it into a sunny border if other plants will shade it slightly.
