FOXGLOVE, WILD (Digitalis purpurea)

20cm bare root super-plug (biennial)

Wild Foxglove is one of Britain's most iconic native wildflowers, instantly recognised by its tall, elegant spires of tubular purple-pink flowers. Rising dramatically above surrounding vegetation, this magnificent biennial creates a striking display in woodlands, hedgerows, heathland and wildflower meadows. Its architectural form and abundant blooms make it a spectacular addition to naturalistic planting schemes, where it brings both beauty and height to the summer landscape.

Foxgloves thrive in sunny or partially shaded locations and perform best in well-drained soils that retain some moisture. They are particularly common on woodland edges, banks, clearings and disturbed ground, where they readily establish from seed. Although individual plants usually flower in their second year before setting seed, they often self-seed freely, ensuring a continuing presence within suitable habitats. Their adaptability and ease of establishment have made them one of the most popular native wildflowers for wildlife-friendly gardens and meadow projects.

Few native wildflowers are as valuable to pollinators as the Foxglove. The deep, nectar-rich flowers are especially attractive to bumblebees, which are perfectly adapted to reach the nectar hidden within the bell-shaped blooms. Honeybees and other beneficial insects also visit the flowers, making Foxglove an important contributor to pollinator conservation. The tall flower spikes can support dozens of blooms at once, providing a substantial food source during the peak of the insect season.

Flowering typically occurs from June to August, with mature plants reaching heights of 60-150cm depending on growing conditions. The towering flower spikes create impressive vertical interest and combine beautifully with species such as Field Scabious, Betony and Oxeye Daisy. Whether growing naturally along a woodland path or standing proudly within a wildflower meadow, Wild Foxglove delivers dramatic summer colour, exceptional wildlife value and the unmistakable charm of the British countryside.
