COMMON SORREL (Rumex acetosa)

20cm bare root super-plug (perennial)

Common Sorrel (Rumex acetosa) is a hardy native perennial wildflower, instantly recognisable by its arrow-shaped leaves and tall stems of reddish-green flower spikes that appear from May to August. Found naturally in meadows, grasslands, roadside verges and open countryside throughout Britain, it thrives in full sun or partial shade and prefers moist, fertile soils. Its deep-rooted nature makes it resilient once established, and it can tolerate a range of growing conditions.

Although its flowers are relatively inconspicuous, Common Sorrel is an important wildlife plant. The foliage serves as a larval food plant for several butterfly species, including the Small Copper, one of Britain's most attractive and widespread butterflies. Female Small Coppers lay their eggs on the leaves, providing a vital food source for the developing caterpillars. Various moth species also utilise sorrels as larval food plants, helping to support a rich diversity of insect life.

The seeds are eaten by a range of birds, while the dense foliage offers shelter for numerous invertebrates. As a native meadow species, Common Sorrel contributes to the ecological complexity of wildflower habitats and is often an indicator of long-established grasslands. Its early spring growth provides valuable greenery when many other meadow plants are only beginning to emerge.

For gardeners and meadow creators, Common Sorrel is a useful addition to wildlife-friendly planting schemes. Its attractive, fresh green leaves add texture throughout the growing season, and its ability to support butterfly populations makes it particularly valuable. Easy to establish and requiring little maintenance, it helps create the diverse, species-rich habitats that are so important for Britain's wildlife.
