BUGLE (Ajuga reptans)

20cm bare root super-plug (perennial)

Bugle is a beautiful native wildflower that brings vibrant colour to grasslands, woodland edges and wildlife-friendly gardens during late spring and early summer. Its dense spikes of deep blue-violet flowers rise above glossy green foliage, creating attractive carpets of colour where conditions are favourable. As a low-growing perennial, Bugle is particularly valued for its ability to provide long-lasting ground cover while also contributing to local biodiversity.

This adaptable species prefers moist, well-drained soils and thrives in partial shade, although it will also grow successfully in full sun if the ground does not become excessively dry. Naturally occurring in meadows, hedgerows and ancient woodlands, Bugle spreads gradually by creeping runners, forming attractive colonies over time. It is especially useful in areas where other wildflowers may struggle, such as beneath trees or along shaded garden borders.

Bugle is an excellent wildlife plant, offering an early and reliable source of nectar for many pollinating insects. Bumblebees, honeybees and a variety of solitary bees are frequent visitors to the flowers, while butterflies also benefit from its abundant nectar supply. Because it blooms earlier than many meadow wildflowers, Bugle provides valuable forage for insects emerging in spring when food sources can still be limited.

Flowering typically occurs from April to June, with plants reaching a height of around 10-30cm. The striking blue flower spikes contrast beautifully with species such as Cowslip, Oxeye Daisy and Red Campion, making Bugle a valuable addition to both meadow seed mixes and naturalistic garden plantings. Combining ornamental appeal with excellent wildlife benefits, it is a dependable native species that helps create a richer and more diverse habitat for pollinators and other beneficial insects.
